Building on the basics presented in the beginner level, intermediate classes are designed to expand your vocabulary and skills.
Intermediate students should be familiar with the essentials of swing:
• Six-count patterns
• Eight-count Lindy Whip and Circle
• Side-by-side and Back Charleston
• Lead-and-follow skills, transitions, and more
You never need a partner; we rotate partners in our classes so everyone has a chance to learn and practice.
This intermediate session will focus on Collegiate Shag, one of the swing-adjacent dances that arose in the 1920s and ’30s and enjoyed a resurgence with the Great Lindy Hop Revival of 1998. You’ll learn the six-count Shag basic pattern in both open and closed position, how to vary the six-count rhythm, and many footwork variations. Lily and David will stress the lead-and-follow mechanism of the unique rhythms of Shag; the momentum of Shag turns; and how momentum is generated so you can incorporate all the moves you know from Lindy Hop and other dances into Shag, and some of the classic Shag patterns as well. This class is suitable for all levels, everyone from brand-new dancers to experienced Lindy Hoppers who want to expand their vocabulary.
